Lists

August 10, 2008 at 9:33 am (Film, Musings)

OK I totally love making lists.  Ask anyone who knows me.  I love to tick stuff off – films, places I’ve visited, mountains I’ve climbed… Going to the shops? I’ll make a list. Going on holiday? I’ll make a list. It’s probably quite annoying to most people, but for those of you who are like me and love lists, there’s this amazing website.  It lets you tick stuff off, on lists that already exist!  Or make your own – share it with others.  It’s called List of Bests and it’s great. I’m addicted.

Go check it out today at Lists of Bests

Films I’ve watched this week:

A Clockwork Orange***

Ok so I’m not one of those people who says they like a film just because they know it’s important/cult/popular.  This is one of those.  Love the concept and the message, but seriously, the acting in this is utterly abysmal.  And far too many bad 70s boobs.

Childsplay****

Can you believe my boyfriend had made it 26 years on this planet without ever seeing this horror gem?  I love the fact that the kid in this manages to be simultaneously creepy and cute at the same time.  You’ve gotta ask why any child in their right mind would want one of those good guy dolls though. Hideous.  (Having said that, anyone remember Cabbage Patch Kids? Yuck.)

Good Guy Doll - Comes with free murder weapon.

Transformers (2007)****

3 star film, 5 star CGI.  Megatron transforming is awesome!  Watched this at one of my regular film nights (a bunch of us go to mine and eat crap and drink Strongbow whilst watching films we’ve seen before) and a friend pointed out that it had a fatal flaw.  What’s that I asked? “Why don’t the Decepticons just buy the kids glasses on ebay?” Doh.

Them (AKA Ils)***

French horror with a great twist at the end.  Does a good job of building tension and is very short.  Would have been 4 stars but for all the usual ridiculous mistakes – not switching lights on when going into a darkened room, splitting up, going to investigate ‘the noise’.  Based on a true story. Eek.

Kenny*****

Oh my god this film is pure genius.  I strongly recommend everyone to watch this asap.  Heartwarming and hilarious mockumentary about a festival toilet plumber.

Kenny and a smell that will outlast religion.

Run Lola Run****

Crazy german action film with great twist and great acting.  Bad German techno though.

That’s all for today my lovelies.  I realise looking at the above that it appears I have far too much time on my hands with all the films I watch, but to be fair I only went back to work on Thursday, and I’m all alone this weekend and decided to be lazy so :p.

More filmage!

August 5, 2008 at 3:14 pm (Film)

Films I watched this week:

1. Amelie ****

Mega sweet and kooky.  Pretty cool stuff, with Audrey Tatou expertly pulling off the Japanese anime big eyes with aplomb. Gotta love the traveling gnome! Why does every else seem to have green eyes though?

2. 3:10 to Yuma ***

Pretty decent Western.  Bale and Crowe are both very good, but the ending was a let down.  Unexpectedly violent in parts.

3. Cape Fear (1962) ****

Disturbing stuff, especially the scene where Robert Mitchum rubs raw egg onto Gregory Peck’s wife.  Evil.  Slightly too ‘what-ho old chap’ in parts (especially Peck’s attempt to throw a punch) but it was the 60s.

Make me an omelette!

Make me an omelette!

4. Battle Royale *****

Why oh why haven’t I watched this yet?  Dark, funny, bloody, and of course lots of crazy, over-reacting Japanese school kids.  (Why run at someone from 50 yards when they have an Uzi and you have a flick knife?)

5. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer **

Kudos for trying to make a fun comic book film when all others around you are making them darker than dark, but try and write a script too eh? Utter tosh (extra star for Chris Evans though mmm…).  I really wish Julian Mahon wouldn’t pluck his eyebrows so much.  It’s just not evil.

Bushy eyebrows are for lesser men! Never for Doom!

Any film recommendations are very much appreciated, especially the classics.  I really have to force myself to choose something like Cape Fear on the Sky+ box rather than say, Silver Surfer, but I’m almost always very glad I did.

Blogging, Batman and Beaches. And Teeth.

August 4, 2008 at 8:49 am (Film, Musings) (, , , )

So, I’m stuck inside after having an operation to remove my pesky wisdom teeth.  Now I can’t really open my jaw and I feel permanently tired.  What to do?  Aha, I thought to myself (yes I am Alan Partridge), start a blog! It’s the 21st century, even your mum has one now (well, I believe she visited blogger.com (shhh!) but I’m pretty sure that’s as far as she’s got).  So, here’s the first post.  May there be many more equally as riveting and witty in the forthcoming months.

The past few days, whilst not spent asleep recuperating, or sucking food as best I can, have been spent searching for a beach holiday.  I’ve got a week booked off work at the end of September and I’m trying to avoid the package holiday route, but I’ve got a budget of less that 500 quid.  Here’s what I need:

1. Heat (above 25 degrees)

2. Nice beach

3. No chavs (can I use that word in a blog – isn’t it non-PC now?)

4. No kids (it’s after they’ve gone back to school so that’s possible)

5. Interesting excursions (you know, ruins and such like)

Doesn’t sound like a tall order really does it? I’ve been looking at Greece, Turkey, Italy, and Croatia.  Most are either too expensive or too chavtastic.  Can I not get a happy medium? Doh.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, although I know I’m blatantly gonna end up doing belly shots in Malia or lewdly flashing a BBC journalist reporting on the dangers of brits binge drinking in Zante.

The wellbeing holiday didn't get off to a good start.

So.  Films.   Love them.  Someone referred to me as IMDB at work the other day, which I’m sure was meant to be an insult but secretly I was really flattered!  I went to see The Dark Knight a couple of weeks ago and was totally blown away.  When Heath Ledger was announced as the new Joker my boyfriend was appalled. He was a massive fan of Jack Nicholson’s Joker and thought that some teen hunk golden boy coming along to produce at best a poor imitation was sacrilegious, despite my protestations to the contrary.  Anyway, we went, we saw, Heath conquered.  The film was an absolute delight to watch, incredibly dark (they don’t do happy films anymore, right?), beautifully shot, and above all, well written.  Character development and everything!  I’ve been gushing about the film ever since and I think it’s gonna sneak into my all time top 10.

RIP

RIP Heath Ledger

OK I’m done for today.  My teeth are hurting and I need to sleep.

Website recommendation for today: Lifehacker - Worth a daily look
